LemonySnicket's A Series of Unfortunate Events was adapted for television by Netflix in 2017 with Neil Patrick Harris as Count Olaf. The First three books were also adapted into one movie in 2004 with Jim Carrey as Count Olaf and Meryl Streep as Aunt Josephine.
Allin all, I do believe the first episode serves as a great introduction for both fans and non-fans to the world of Lemony Snicket's A Series of Unfortunate Events. If you prefer something more scaled back, but still possessing a surreal quality to it, I recommend checking out the Netflix version of the book series.
